A controlled advanced smooth surface that improves biocompatibility

Motiva® continues to accumulate a body of research on breast implant surfaces and the human immune response demonstrating that the chronic inflammatory complications associated with macrotextured implants far outweigh any of its potential benefits. Studies show that surface architecture is an influential parameter in controlling host immune reactions and fibrotic encapsulation.5-18

This confirms our decision from day 1, never to produce aggressively textured implants, and to focus on the development of a novel, advanced smooth surface known as SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface®

The purposefully designed surface architecture of SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface® has been found to have improved biocompatibility, forming a healthy capsule, as compared to both traditional smooth, microtextured, and macrotextured implants, and showed no formation of double capsules. This suggests a differential immune response than with the other surface implants.1

As an optional feature in Motiva® implants, our battery-free, passive Radiofrequency Identification Device (RFID) stores the implant’s electronic serial number (ESN) and other important implant information (such as manufacturing and surgery details), which can be instantly retrieved through a hand-held reader.2

Our patented visual barrier layer is what gives Motiva® implants their signature light blue tint, allowing surgeons to visually verify for 100 % integrity prior to insertion.

Improved flexibility for easier insertion

Our proprietary, flexible, multilayer system known as TrueMonobloc® is designed to harmonize the shell-gel-patch interaction of Motiva® implants, which are 100% gel-filled devices – thus reducing rippling/wrinkling while allowing it to bend and squeeze for insertion through much smaller incisions than the standard size (as small as 2.5 cm).

The unique ability of ERGONOMIX® to mimic the natural dynamics of breast tissue (holding a teardrop shape when a patient is standing and a round shape when she is lying down) maximizes patient comfort and is particularly well suited to women with active lifestyles.

Ergonomix2® brings the next generation of Supersilicones, a new formula for enhanced ergonomy and feel with improved mechanical properties.3-4

Motiva® Implants Safety & Performance Data

Safety and performance data collected through our robust Post-Market Surveillance System confirm that SmoothSilk®/ SilkSurface® contributes to superior post-operative outcomes, with patients reporting fewer high- and low-risk complications. In particular, the data demonstrates a very low (less than 1 %) capsular contracture rate in patients with SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface®.

Additionally, this surface has been associated with a healthy tissue capsule formation and a significantly low expression of pro-inflammatory immune factors, key for optimal patient recovery and lower the risk of post-operative complications associated with excessive and prolonged inflammation.1

Did you know?

The most recent study performed at the Koch Institute from MIT, published in the Nature Biomedical Engineering Journal, observed in vivo physiological and immune responses in mice, rabbits, and explanted capsules from human models to different silicone breast implant surface architectures, ranging from traditional smooth to advanced smooth to micro or macro/heavily textured.

Findings suggest that SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface® implants showed improved biocompatibility as:

  • SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface® provoked the less profibrotic inflammation and FBR across mouse and rabbit models and human capsules.
  • Its profile is characterized by a low inflammatory cell infiltrate and anti-fibrotic gene expression.
  • This in turn should minimize foreign body immunerelated complications, such as capsular contracture, malposition, seroma, double capsule and BIA-ALCL.1
